The University of Central Oklahoma Outdoor Adventure Recreation boathouse on Lake Arcadia offers affordable outdoor activities on and around the lake.
Located on Midwest Blvd. south of Route 66, the center opened in 2009 as an extension of UCO’s Wellness Center. The 4,800-square-foot facility is open to the public and students all year.
“All we want is to promote confidence in the outdoors,” said Alex Allen, UCO recreation programs coordinator. “Whether that be canoe, kayaking, teaching to be a good steward of the land. Things like that.”
The center is funded in part by UCO student fees, so faculty and those enrolled can hit the lake in a kayak or canoe, or pedal around the water on a mountain or road bike for $5 per hour, with a park entrance fee. Community members can participate for $10 per hour plus the park fee.
A meeting room can also be reserved at no cost for UCO students and faculty and for $35 per hour to the public.
Those wanting to venture into new activities can take a variety of courses in bike maintenance, outdoor cooking, camping, team building and kayak safety.
Outdoor recreation also offers American Red Cross safety and certification classes such as CPR, first aid, blood borne pathogens and lifeguard training.
